Yet a guard unit's lens reveals he is alive, and a mysterious woman with gold eyes, Iris Quill, is somehow connected. Iris runs the old lens machine over fungal beds, catching light for a living, though she has never had any of her own. She sleeps in a hole in the cavern wall, surrounded by mirrors and spores. When a Crown woman of standing descends to reclaim her betrothed from this lower seductress, the Marshal sees an opportunity. He wants Iris alive, not for mercy, but because she is arming the districts with something far more dangerous than rust. As the canyon lights up like a gallows and curfew becomes total, the engineer who built the pipe returns with a plan. He knows the junction inside the cloud, the Mouth, and its reverse valve. If opened, anything pushed from below will flood every lamp in the canyon. But first, they must climb into the cloud, where three hundred guards hang in rows, looking down. Nobody looks at the pipe. The engineer owes them light, and Iris carries the hollow sun, a Steward heart that has burned for twenty years. Together, they must decide how much darkness they are willing to endure to ignite a revolution.
