What is In 'Twixt Vows about?

In a village where rosemary is pressed into palms to make memory hold, a young hunter named Theodren has vanished into the marsh days before his vows to Edith. His betrothed lies fevered and poisoned, and the village has already decided his guilt: Edith's amulet—a pale horn charm carved with a running deer—went with him, and the children by the north fence watched him walk into the fog. Ariel is sent to Briardale to bring him back, warned not to go lightly, not after Lady Cerwan rode that road to her vow feast and was never seen again. The trail begins in commerce and small betrayals. A shopkeeper bought the hunter's bow, its string gone soft but the wood still sound, and watched him carry the coin straight to a silversmith. There, a chain was fitted through the hollow of a little horn deer—for his bride, the smith says. But the amulet never left Edith's bedside, and the hunter turned back toward the village rather than away from it. The fen answers with older rules. A lantern that cries like a woman draws men into the reeds and keeps them. A hound is set loose and flees; something strikes from above. Steel, a dying man warns, will not end it. In the fog Ariel finds a silver heron and a name: Lady Carwyn, who rode to her vow feast and never let go of a promise. What is sworn may set her free—or bind the living to the dead. The vow with Edith waits at the water's edge.
