Below a permanent cloud of factory-made smog, generations have lived without the sun, their eyes surgically altered to see in the dark. Orrin Quill, a grandfather, is taken by soldiers from above who demand the rest of his family—including his granddaughter Iris—be brought up. But Iris is no ordinary child: her pupils can shrink in the sun and widen in the dark, a trait she inherited from her mother, who came down the shaft twenty-eight years ago and died in the breeding beds. As the Chancellor above plans to exploit the underground population for labor, a former soldier named Rooke—whose father was executed by the Justice—returns to the canyon with a warning. He tells Quill to find Dorran Kell and say that Cal is alive, a message that will set off a chain of revelations about the true history of the Keeping, the beds, and the girl who may be the key to bridging two worlds that were never meant to meet.
