What is Wetherell Park about?

Eleanor Trevelyan arrives at the imposing estate of Wetherell Park, engaged by the Duke to manage the household and catalog the library. But the house is not empty: the Duke keeps to his rooms, his son Lord Haverford is absent in London, and the only other soul is the watchful housekeeper, Mrs. Briggs. Eleanor is shown to a room in the East Wing and told she is expected—precisely. When Lord Haverford returns, he finds a stranger in his library and immediately asserts his authority. This is his house, his library, his estate, he declares; she is there at his sufferance, a guest, not its mistress. Eleanor, unflinching, observes that everything in the room begs to be touched—except, it seems, by him. The air between them crackles with instant antagonism. Yet the days settle into a tense rhythm. Breakfast is laid for two, and Haverford joins her, ledger in hand, trading barbs over the morning table. He accuses her of bringing her tone to every morning; she accuses him of bringing his consequence like a coat. When the Duke finally summons Eleanor, he is blunt: he is told she has already crossed swords with his son. He does not like you, the Duke says. She does not require it. Good, he replies—she is there to be useful, not liked. But the household keys, delivered by Mrs. Briggs on the Duke's orders, become another front in the quiet war. Haverford protests that his father did not consult him. Eleanor suggests perhaps he was too busy not reading in the library. Every exchange is a duel, every courtesy a challenge, and the library itself—its untouched volumes, its suffocating order—becomes the silent witness to a struggle for control in a house where no one truly holds it.
