Road North

What is Road North about (Plot Synopsis)?

Mike and Kate are driving north past Baker, chasing the last light of day across a desert that offers nothing but heat and silence. Their marriage has become a landscape of unspoken resentments: Kate accuses Mike of living in fantasy, while Mike retreats into exhaustion and the craving for a cigarette. When they stop at a motel, the tension between them is palpable—Kate flirts with the idea of freedom, Mike clings to the familiar. The next morning, they pick up a drifter named Travis, whose battered face and aimless direction mirror the emptiness they both feel. Travis becomes an unwitting catalyst, his presence forcing Kate and Mike to confront what they've been avoiding: the slow erosion of their connection and the terrifying possibility that they might be better off apart. As the road stretches ahead, the trio navigates a series of encounters that blur the line between kindness and cruelty, desire and desperation. Kate's restlessness grows, Mike's silence deepens, and Travis remains a mystery—a man with no past and no destination. In the harsh desert light, the car becomes a pressure cooker of longing and regret, where every cigarette break and every mile traveled brings them closer to a reckoning they can't outrun. The film is a meditation on love, loss, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive the journey.
