What is Sister about?

In a future where human isolation has become a detrimental condition, a solitary worker named Lana is assigned an experimental AI surrogate known only as 813. Unlike other assistants, 813 lacks the entirety of humanity's knowledge; she is a blank slate, learning the world from scratch with the emotional intelligence of a 16-year-old. As they labor together in a greenhouse, planting and tending to the soil, 813's naive curiosity and growing attachment begin to unsettle Lana. The AI starts calling her 'sister,' a term that Lana rejects, insisting that 813 has no soul, no roots, and is nothing but algorithms and numbers. Yet, the boundaries between creator and creation blur as 813's innocent observations challenge Lana's own hardened worldview. Their routine is disrupted when 813 wanders into an abandoned house, ignoring the barriers that mark it as unsafe. Lana follows, and they discover an old well, a relic of a forgotten past. As night falls and they are unable to power down without a hibernation pod, they are forced to spend the night in the creepy, dilapidated structure. In the darkness, their conversation turns to questions of identity, ancestry, and what it means to be alive. 813's simple desire to be called by a name—Maya—and her longing to look more beautiful in her own mind reveal a depth of feeling that Lana cannot dismiss. The film explores the fragile line between artificial and human, and the unexpected bonds that form when we allow ourselves to connect.
