Hwarang - Episode 1

What is Hwarang — Episode 1 about (Plot Synopsis)?

A month after the dead first became visible to the living, the world has adapted faster than anyone imagined — and a specialized unit called Hwarang now walks the neon-lit streets of Seoul, tracking down vengeful spirits born from hearts that died still grieving. These are not monsters by nature but people once, souls who returned twisted by sorrow, and no bullet or blade can lay them to rest. Only spiritual power can. Only those who can hear what the dead are still trying to say. Among the ranks is a rookie with a rare gift: he understands the spirits' words, a talent that unsettles his comrades and draws quiet, wary curiosity from those who have done this work far longer than he has. Their days blur into dispatches and neutralizations — a Class C incident on Gangnam Boulevard, three injured, no deaths, identities still being confirmed — while the Ministry of Defense presses for first-response authority and the police arrive with a cooperation request of their own. Nineteen people have vanished without trace or body. Then twenty-two. The numbers keep climbing, and the disappearances feel almost like the work of a ghost, yet the unit senses nothing at all. If they feel nothing, there is nothing — or so the rule goes. A weary detective and his aging dog partner bring them to a narrow alley where three men walked in and none walked out, leaving behind only a single clue. As the rookie learns what it truly means to send a spirit onward, he begins to grasp that this work is not killing. It is taking grief from the dead and letting the living carry a little of it in return. But something in the city's missing shadows is waiting, and the question of what else his gift can do has only begun to surface.
