Queen Elizabeth I

Hvad handler Queen Elizabeth I om (Handling & Synopsis)?

Step behind the velvet curtain of the royal bath chamber, where the most powerful woman in England reveals the elaborate, steam-filled machinery of her morning routine. In a palace built by her father, Henry VIII, the queen commands a small army of servants who haul firewood, heat water in a stove fit for roasting an ox, and ferry warm linen through galleries lined with tapestries. This is no simple bath; it is a production, a daily spectacle that begins before dawn and consumes half the morning. The queen, draped in her smock, guides us through the hot room where bad humors sweat from the body, then into the wooden tub where rosemary, lavender, and chamomile perfume the water. She muses on the absurdity of using Castile soap from Spain—the very nation sending a fleet to invade her—and wryly declares it no treason. Her own hair, hidden beneath wigs, is washed with rosemary water and combed with ivory, slowly, deliberately. The ritual extends beyond the bath: wet linen goes to the laundress, who beats it with lye and lays it on grass to whiten, while geese add their own marks. In the still room, ladies distill rosewater drop by drop, capturing the essence of a garden in a tiny bottle. With wit and imperious charm, the queen reminds us that while we turn a little tap, she turns a small army—and that hot water from a wall is a luxury someone must earn. This is a rare, intimate glimpse of majesty at its most human, where even a bath is a matter of state.
